Entheogen Terminology

Definition: ​Entheogens, also called psychedelics or hallucinogens, are naturally- and chemically-produced substances originating from plants or certain species and used as tools for greater self-awareness, healing, spiritual awakening, and bringing clarity to life.

Root:​ The term “entheogen” comes from the ancient Greek root words “entheo” which translates to “full of god” or “inspired by the divine within,” which breaks down into “en” meaning “within” and “theo” meaning “god or spirit.” So, “to generate God or Spirit within.” It shares a root with the word “enthusiasm”, meaning “possessed by god.” “Gen” means “creation” or “to come into being.”

Usage:​ The term “entheogen” was coined in the late
1970s initially in the work of Ruck, Staples, Bigwood, Ott,
and Wasson, and later by a group of ethnobotanists and
scholars of mythology. It was officially added to the English
language in 1979. Entheogen is a newer word used in place
of “psychedelic” in order to differentiate their use as
medicines from recreational usage, to offset the stigma
associated with the term “psychedelics,” and to help people give the proper respect and honor to these plant teachers.

Alternative Names:​ Entheogens are referred to in many ways, such as hallucinogens, psychedelics, plant medicines, plant teachers, sacred medicines, and sacraments. Some will refer to certain medicines as the “mother” or “grandmother” or “father” or “grandfather” as well as other bynames. Certain entheogens, like iboga and ibogaine, are referred to as an “oneirogen,” meaning “dream-creating” and “producing dream-like visions.” In Africa there are over 100 plants and herbs that have this dream-creating effect.
